More Honors in International Competition
Over 1,000 writers from around the world entered the 2009 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. Kate's short story, “Last Flight Out of Charleston” was among only 24 awarded an Honorable Mention in the July 24 ceremony in Key Largo, Florida. Her short story “Disengagement” won similar honors last year. Both are part of her Infidels collection.
Presentation at International Conference on Adoption and Culture
Kate had the honor of presenting her adoption memoir at the third annual conference on Adoption and Culture, held at MIT from April 29-May 2, 2010. Other presenters included Ann Fessler and Meredith Hall. Kate has also spoken at the national convention of the American Adoption Congress on April 26, 2009 in Cleveland, Ohio. As a special treat, Kate’s birthmother Val offered her perspective on their reunion at the AAC convention as well.

On the craft of writing:
To write well is no easy task. It is the mastery of illusion. To whittle away at some words until all the knots are smooth and the slivers gone, until the solidity of the phrase turns upon itself so the reader cannot see where your inspiration ends and your craft begins: there lies the beauty. There is the rush. And so we write because we have to, to discover that magic again and once again.
